Childrens clinical pathway group: Scanspeak, a software system developed by NHS Ashton Leigh and Wigan speech and language therapy team, winner of the TrusTECH innovation award in 2008.
The idea for ScanSpeak arose 6 years ago following experience in helping very severely disabled children acquire language skills. These patients had such severe disabilities that they were unable to access conventional assistive communication technology that relies on the ability to interface with a keyboard or mouse. Whilst specialist assistive communication devices were available, the speech and language therapists recognised that the software installed on these devices was based on conventional grammatical rules, it did not reflect the processes via which young children acquire language skills and as a result could inhibit an individual’s learning process. ScanSpeak originated as a set of laminated cards in which words and themes were arranged semantically and split into logical categories that children would select to build up sentences. Based on the success of this initial approach, the speech and language therapists converted ScanSpeak into a page-set that can be loaded onto a range of assistive communication devices. The vocabulary is arranged over 20 pages with up to 96 symbols per page organised into 6 blocks of 16 symbols
