NHS Yorkshire and the Humber - Welcome to our region

NHS Yorkshire and the Humber was formed in July 2006 following the merger of the three former SHAs of West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, North and East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire. Our region has a population of 5.12 million and covers an area of 15,510 square kilometres. Our long term aims are to improve health, reduce health inequalities and improve service quality for our region. In order to help us achieve these aims we launched ‘Healthy Ambitions’, our regional next stage review report in May 2008 which sets out our SHA’s vision for the NHS in the region for the next decade.

Our vision

The NHS in Yorkshire and the Humber has a strong track-record of innovation and improvement founded on strong partnerships working with our Regional Development Agency, (Yorkshire Forward), our Regional Innovation Hub, (Medipex), local business, academia and other partners.

Every SHA has a legal obligation to promote innovation in the commissioning and provision of healthcare. Through our regional strategic plan Healthy Ambitions, published in May 2008, we set out the framework for improving healthcare in our region.   Delivering Healthy Ambitions, published in March 2009, sets out our recommendations on how healthcare will be improved over the next ten years. Details can be found at:www.healthyambitions.co.uk

Primary Care Trusts play an important new role in promoting innovation through the commissioning of innovative world-class services. For more information about our world-class commissioning, please visit: www.yorkshireandhumber.nhs.uk

We believe that innovation is the successful invention, piloting and diffusion of good ideas into mainstream practice. It is a broad concept that encompasses not only research, but service delivery and redesign.

The most successful organisations are those that encourage employees to innovate and reward them for doing so.  If the NHS in Yorkshire and the Humber is to realise the full potential of its 140,000 employees it must do the same.

Healthcare technologies: a priority sector

Yorkshire & Humber is at the forefront of the UK’s latest advances in healthcare, making it one of the most important regions for the healthcare technology industry, and one of the fastest growing nationally.

We have one of the UK’s highest concentrations of medical device companies, superb specialist skills (especially in surgical instrumentation, orthopaedics and advanced wound-care), exceptional access to clinical trials, pioneering R&D, and Europe’s largest teaching hospital.

Our region has a real opportunity to make the most of the collaboration potential and resources held within businesses, the NHS and our universities. Creating an environment where businesses can innovate and increase their competitive advantage will bring real economic benefits to the whole region. It will help to create high levels of added value in engineering, biological research and manufacturing, as well as in other rapidly developing areas such as ICT.

In classifying healthcare technologies as a priority sector, we are supporting growth, innovation, productivity and competitiveness within Yorkshire & Humber.

Our partners

We want to foster a pioneering health service in our region that makes best use of the talents of NHS staff, the higher education sector and industry.
International evidence demonstrates that patients benefit by bringing together the talents of different sectors.

Health Innovation and Education Clusters (HIECs)

We are working with our local NHS and partner agencies in supporting the development of proposals for HIECs within the region.

HIECs will bring together many partners across primary, community and secondary care, universities and colleges, and industry.  To find out more please contact: adam.wardle@yorksandhumber.nhs.uk

Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRCs)

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) have established nine CLAHRCs in England to undertake high-quality applied health research focused on the needs of patients and to support the translation of research evidence into practice in the NHS.

Two of the nine CLAHRCs established on 1st October 2008 are in our region – one in South Yorkshire hosted by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and one engaging Leeds, York and Bradford hosted by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

CLAHRCs are collaborative partnerships between a university and the surrounding NHS organisations, focused on improving patient outcomes through the conduct and application of applied health research. They will create and embed approaches to research and its dissemination that are specifically designed to take account of the way that health care is increasingly delivered across sectors and a wide geographical area.
