NHS East Midlands - Welcome to our region

Who we are

 /East Midlands SHA/MAP_updated_NHSDETAILS200pix

/East Midlands SHA/NHSEastMidlands33pixNHS East Midlands provides strategic leadership to the NHS organisations in the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. These organisations have a total NHS budget of £6billion, and serve a combined population of 4.3 million.

We have four main roles:

  • Strategic leadership
  • Development
  • Co-ordination
  • Performance assurance.

We also make sure that local health systems operate effectively and efficiently and that national standards and priorities are met, so that services for patients and the local communities we serve continually improve in line with Government policy.

NHS East Midlands promotes ‘joined up service’ provision between health and social care, supporting PCTs to work in partnership with local authorities to secure better joint-working solutions and seamless care for those who access these services.

Our vi/East Midlands SHA/INNOVATING_LOGO100pxsion

innovating for excellence

Our regional vision for delivering better health and better care is based on what patients, staff and the public have told us is important to them.

We have identified seven promises which we believe everyone wants to see from their health service:

•    Safer services
•    A better patient experience
•    More clinically effective services
•    Improved health and reduced inequalities
•    More accessible services
•    Better value for money
•    Real influence for patients and the public

These continue to be the guiding principles by which we shape, develop and deliver NHS services in the East Midlands.

Building the foundations for innovation

High Quality Care for All gave SHAs a new duty to innovate. To fulfill this duty, we are putting in place a number of key building blocks to support and encourage innovation.

  • Building on the Next Stage Review principle of co-production, two Chief Executive sponsors for innovation have been appointed: Peter Homa and Andrew Kenworthy. Peter Homa is Chief Executive of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Andrew Kenworthy is Chief Executive of NHS Nottingham City. Each organisation in the region has nominated a Board-level lead for innovation who will work with the SHA to further develop our innovation strategy.
  • We will use the new Innovation Fund to increase the quantity, spread and speed of innovation, improve quality and increase productivity.
  • We will work with PCTs to agree a small set of consistent quality and innovation metrics to be included in contracts.
  • Through our quality Observatory, we will agree key data sets to enable PCTs and other organisations to benchmark their outcomes and improvements locally and nationally.
  • We will work closely with all major stakeholders in health and social care, industry, education, the voluntary and third sectors to develop clear priorities for action, identify key deliverables and agree measures for success.

Our Regional NHS Innovation Hub

Read more about NHS Innovations East Midlands here

NHS Innovators within the East Midlands have embraced the innovation challenges laid down by Lord Darzi at the 2009 EXPO. In 2009/10 NHS Innovations East Midlands reviewed over 100 potential projects and raised more than £850,000 in external funding for innovation projects. The hub has run a series of very successful events in the region promoting the NIHR Invention 4 Innovation funding, which has resulted in a number of applications to the fund. This, in addition to the Regional Innovation Fund, will ensure that innovation is embedded into front-line healthcare practice in 2010/11.

Please see below for more information on i4i funding:

NHS Innovations East Midlands is the innovation hub for this region. It acts as an advocate for the NHS in innovations that improve patient care and supports NHS staff to make an active contribution to the creation, adoption and diffusion of innovation. Since its formation in 2003 the Hub dealt with over 500 disclosures, facilitated 63 revenue generating deals and generated £980,000 of income for Trusts in the region. It has a portfolio of over 40 active projects. Each is an idea originated by NHS staff to improve the delivery of patient care across a wide range of disciplines from ophthalmic surgery to workforce planning.

Our partners

Working with partner organisations is a key role for NHS East Midlands. Our close relationship with the Government Office  http://www.goem.gov.uk/ enables the SHA to influence those who can affect the broader determinants of health as well as ensuring the NHS can contribute to regional prosperity through close links with East Midlands Development Agency http://www.emda.org.uk/main/and the East Midlands Regional Assembly http://www.emra.gov.uk/.

East Midlands Health Innovation and Education Cluster, (EMHIEC)

The successful EMHIEC bid was supported and developed by a wide range of individuals, teams and organisations with a vested interest in the future of education provision, workforce development and service delivery across the whole of the East Midlands.  The basic premise was to establish a vehicle which would help accelerate the changes required in the provider landscape, in terms of responsiveness to emerging priorities.  It will support the rapid adoption and diffusion of innovation in and through education, and help shape the workforce and services that best serve the East Midlands and its local health communities.

Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRCs)

In the East Midlands, there are currently two Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRCs),  based on partnerships between 1) Nottingham University and NHS Trusts in Nottingham and 2) the University of Leicester together with NHS Trusts in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. These are research project based collaborations.

Nationally there are also Academic Health Science Centres being bid for with AHSCs subject to international peer review. At present there is no AHSC in the East Midlands. It will be important to build on these existing partnerships and clarify the relationships been these organisations and any newly formed HIEC to establish a productive collaborative platform rather than direct competition.

Medilink

Medilink East Midlands is the regional industry association for the healthcare and bioscience sector. Medilink EM provides a range of support services to help companies establish, develop and grow. Medilink EM is active in stimulating collaborations between the industry, clinical and academic bases. Medilink EM also leads a regional initiative focused on stimulating innovation, the Healthcare and Bioscience iNet.  The iNet helps people along the innovation journey from concept to commercialisation by providing sector information and advice and by linking them to relevant and appropriate services.

We work closely with Medilink East Midlands and the Healthcare and Bioscience iNet; both are important support organisations for lifescience companies in the region. We have held a number of joint events focusing on innovation, the commercialisation and adoption of innovations into the NHS, and supporting collaborations between NHS and industry.  We have also collaborated with the iNet in creating opportunities for companies to trial their products through NHS Innovations East Midlands.

Medilink EM holds an annual event, Innovation Day,  to celebrate and promote the life science sector in the East Midlands. The Medilink East Midlands Innovation Day and Business Awards ceremony is the primary event for the lifesciences sector in the region. We have demonstrated our commitment to ensuring the success of this event through our sponsorship of the “Collaboration with the NHS” Award.
