Vocera

Vocera Communication system

Vocera is a person to person, person to group communication device, that is worn around a clinician’s neck on a lanyard. It is voice activated, replaces paging systems, and can be integrated with the organisation's telephony system. It allows clinicians to use voice commands to communicate immediately with a colleague anywhere on the Hospital campus. Also alert messages can be automatically 'sent to a clinician's badge', i.e that specific cancer patients have been admitted to hospital or that a patient has been admitted with a history of Hospital Acquired Infection allowing preparation for the correct treatment. Clinicians can also easily call on-call services without knowing who is on duty, e.g. “Call on call radiographer”.

Benefit to patients and staff?

  • Studies have shown that paging clincians can result in response times between 5 and 30 minutes, with Vocera the response is as little as 6 seconds – faster responses save lives
  • Paging does not normally allow for two way communication, with Vocera a clinician can get advice or a consultation within seconds/East Midlands SHA/Vocera200pix
  • Medics can deal with issues from nurses without having to find a telephone to ring them
  • Sends alerts to clinicians’ badges to pre-warn them and enable speedy preparation of the correct care i.e MRSA/C-difficile barrier nursing or that a patient known to have cancer has been admitted as an emergency
  • Urgent pathology results sent to Medics badges can save lives
