Children's Page Turner
Jan Nicholson an occupational therapist of Derby Hospitals came up with an idea for a mechanical page turner to help children such as those with cerebral palsy to read books by turning over the pages for them. Together with Rolls Royce and NHS Innovations East Midlands a small device has been developed that can easily fit on the type of table that these children have on their wheelchair.
Because of physical disabilities affecting their hands some disabled young children require others to open books for them and turn pages. Machines exist to turn pages for adult books / newspapers which cost thousands of pounds which are big, heavy and potentially unsafe around small inquisitive fingers of siblings and peers.
Benefit to patients and staff?
- Specially designed for children which allows those who cannot turn pages to read books
- Helps children with disabilities to become more inclusive
- Small enough to easily fit onto a wheelchair table or desk (most commercial designs are enormous devices for example for turning pages of music or newspapers)
- Can work off rechargeable batteries to make it more portable
- Less than half the cost of other products and is fun to use
