Deprivation of Liberty (DOL) Training Pack

The aim of this DOLS Training Pack is to support trainers/managers to provide training/awareness raising with health and social care staff on issues that have an impact on the potential risk of a Deprivation of Liberty.  This training will support these staff to implement the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and Deprivation of Liberty (DOL) Safeguards in their setting.  The pack draws upon guidance in the DOL Safeguards Code of Practice and the MCA Code of Practice provided by the Dept of Health.  It also draws on CSCI’s “Risks Rights and Restraints” document that examines the use of restraint in providing care/treatment.

Deprivation of Liberty is part of the Mental Capacity Act, links to best practice in minimising Restraint, providing care Safeguarding, discharge planning and the personalisation of care.

Before using the pack, trainers will need an understanding of the key elements of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS) to support discussions arising from the use of the DVDs.  The CD Rom contained within the pack contains information on MCA and DOL to support this.

It is the responsibility of the users of this Training Pack to ensure that the training supports and integrates with guidance set out in the Codes of Practice for the DOL and MCA, local and national best practice and guidance around Mental Capacity and Deprivation of Liberty.

The creators recommend that each area includes a local information sheet within the pack to provide a contact point for further advice, information and guidance on local procedures.  Alternatively, contact your Local Social Services or PCT for further information.
