Sherwood Forest NHS Foundation Trust chose to invest in the Vocera system to provide staff members with a means of easily, quickly and effectively contacting colleagues around the campus.
The Vocera system uses a small device known as a “badge” that is worn around the neck or attached to the lapel. It is small and lightweight yet robust and because the system works on voice recognition there is no need for a number pad. The silver button on the front of the badge is used to activate the device.
Vocera allows colleagues to contact each other by the single press of a button and then speaking either the person’s name or the job role of the person they wish to contact: receiving a call is hands-free and the call is connected within seconds unlike a bleep where the recipient has to find a telephone in order to call back.
When a staff member is unable to accept a call messages can be left - again unlike the bleep system. Furthermore the system allows for conference calling multiple badges, broadcasting to groups of people, and placing urgent calls and urgent messages.
Vocera is integrated with the telephony system meaning that badge users can be contacted from a telephone and can place calls to internal extensions and external numbers from the badge. Emails can be sent from the badge to any registered user – even if they are not on line.
Call forwarding to external numbers (including mobiles) allows staff who work away from the site to be contacted from the campus simply by saying “Call John Smith” – there is no need for staff to know or remember the mobile numbers of colleagues.
The Trust has over 2000 registered users with over 350 concurrent users on a regular basis: on average 15,000 calls are placed on the system in a normal working week.
Vocera is now a firmly established key communications method in the Trust. It is supported by the Nottinghamshire Health Informatics Service.
