The Young Foundation:  The Young Foundation in health and social care

The Young Foundation brings together insights, innovation and entrepreneurship to meet pressing health and social needs including advising public bodies and supporting new social ventures. The Young Foundation’s involvement in healthcare over many decades has combined research, policy influence and the creation of new ventures. It has pioneered ideas of active ageing and patient empowerment and helped launch ventures ranging from Healthline (the precursor to NHS Direct) to the Patients Association, Language Line (now a very large global business) to the College of Health (which pioneered patients working with doctors and nurses to understand patient experience).

Today all of our work is shaped by a belief that people have great untapped potential, and that applies in healthcare as much as in other fields. We see great opportunities in the years ahead to mobilise people’s own abilities to live healthier lives, to manage their own conditions and to support others, all in partnership with highly skilled professionals.

The Regional Innovation Funds Advisory Service (RIFAS) is run jointly with NESTA to support, advise and increase the capacity of the SHAs to fulfil their statutory duty to innovate. Much of this work consists of development of the 250 innovation project across England have been funded by the 10 Regional Innovation Funds, covering a huge variety of geographies, diseases, and techniques. The RIFAS team works with health innovators to create new services which shift the setting of care, engage patients in the delivery of their own care, and generate buy in among staff. It also aims to promote a proactive response to the medium-term pressure for cash-releasing savings. This means doing more differently, not just doing more efficiently.

Health Launchpad is a social venture fund which supports promising ideas in their early stages with intensive hands-on support in the form of finance, ideas and social capital. As long-term conditions such as asthma, obesity, mental illness and chronic back pain become more prevalent, our aim is to promote patient-centred approaches, which focus on prevention, continuity of care and non-medical support. Our purpose is to turn those ideas into new ventures that will have a profound an impact on health and quality of life in the UK.

Our social entrepreneurs in residence are members of the Health Launchpad team embedded in NHS Trusts and local authorities

Who are we targeting?

Innovators within the NHS and local government and commissioners and managers interested in supporting innovation. Private and civil society organisations interested in collaboration.

Why NHS staff should visit our showcase?

We are looking to expand our network of social entrepreneurs in residence; support the NHS and local government to better find, nurture and grow innovations; and continue to learn ourselves about examples of successful innovation and the barriers that hinder innovation.
