Patient Safety - VitalPAC -
40,000 people in English hospitals each year from avoidable causes. A major factor is the failure by clinical staff to identify that their condition is deteriorating and to resuscitate them promptly. The reasons include incomplete and untimely monitoring of their condition, inadequate risk assessment and delays in escalating their care.
VitalPAC is the first system developed specifically to improve the care of these vulnerable people. It ensures that nurses take complete sets of observations, as often as needed, and that more senior staff attend promptly as required. It also ensures that clinicians comply with a range of hospital protocols, for example to improve infection control and ensure that blood clots are prevented.
VitalPAC is a wireless, handheld system that captures data in real-time at the bedside so that patients can be monitored continuously from anywhere in the hospital. It integrates easily into existing hospital IT systems, reducing paperwork and enabling staff to spend more time with patients and less time filling out forms. Data capture becomes an almost invisible part of clinical care, enabling a range of other functions to be driven – such as bed management, capacity planning, performance management and external reporting.
Real-time quality control and assurance is commonplace in most industries. The healthcare sector, and the NHS in particular, is lagging behind. VitalPAC is one of the first systems that demonstrates that data can be captured at the bedside and used in real time to drive improvements in care.
